We were able to go horseback riding, which for many was a first time experience. Margaret and Brian greeted us at Plateau Stables and promptly organized our group of 17 into two groups, one for beginners and one for novice riders. I was placed in the first group and was assigned to a horse named Orchid. Orchid is a beautiful brown horse who seemed very spirited to say the least. Me, being an inexperienced rider was fine walking instead of trotting or running. The ride lasted an hour or so and the views were amazing. When we returned to Plateau Stables, Brian gave us the back stories on some of the horses (hash in Chichewa). Orchid happened to be a refugee from Zimbabwe. Brian stated that about ten years ago, horses were being slaughtered for their meat. Apparently, farmers rounded up horses and sent them out of the country without papers. Luckily, Margaret and Brian bought Orchid in Lilongwe and later rented out Plateau Stables here in Zomba. They believe she has Arabian in her but that’s all they know. Her story is touching and I am so glad to have ridden her, even if she was a little feisty. :0)
